Portraits in the Grass

June 3, 2012

These are 2 more rolls of Portra 400 that I shot yesterday. I also shot a roll of HP5 that the lab screwed up, so only color this time.

Daughter.

Mother.

This is Macey, my dog. She loves treats, as you will soon see.

Are those treats?

View from the backyard. Not bad.

I’m fairly pleased with these 2 rolls. I screwed up a bunch of images because I didn’t get the focus correct. I’m finding out that manual focusing while at F1.8 is not as easy at it may sound, and I am quite rusty… more practice is needed. After I shoot the last couple rolls of Portra I will try a few rolls of Kodak BW400CN since the lab can’t screw that film up. Stay tuned for more!

My First Roll of Portra 400

May 31, 2012

These are the highlights from my first ever roll of Kodak Portra 400. It had been years since I shot any film and it feels wonderful to get back into it. I’m very happy with the results from this first roll and I’m looking forward to shooting more Portra, learning its characteristics and hopefully improving as a photographer.

I have to thank Jonathan Canlas, because without him and his fantastic book Film Is Not Dead I probably would have not shot these images and started this blog. I came across his book at my local bookstore and it really inspired me to pick up the camera again, get a light meter and some film and shoot. Also, I have to thank my beautiful girlfriend Jessica and our crazy dog Sasha for being patient with me and doing a great job modeling. Hopefully this is the start of something beautiful.
